My first video

Welcome to my first youtube video. It's in sign language and not geared for you "hearing" bloggy peeps. I'm merely letting you guys know what I'm up to and I DO have some deaf readers. (hello deaf peeps)

I didn't write everything I said but below is a general script of what I am talking about.

But hey, youtube isn't fully captioned either soooo.... welcome to my world. I am used to it.

I want to find other deafies who have lost a child/spouse or loved one. I can't be the only one in the world who lost a child.

I didn't bother to do a "re-take" because when it comes to grief videos, there are no "re-takes". What you see is what you get.

Very, very paraphrased..... (my five o'clock captioned news looks like this every night, so....)

Name’s Sherry. Didn’t get all pretty for you. Go elsewhere for that...

Lost daughter Nicole June 10, 2009

Want to talk about grief – not much out there for deaf, we can help each other?

Blah blah blah (well, it's true)

Went to Compassionate Friends with interpreter but interpreter separates deaf from group, blah blah blah

Don’t know where to begin

I tell the Kleenex story (it's on my blog)

I apologize for moving camera around, not used to youtube.

I show Nicole’s 30 BD party invitation

Nicole’s bookmark bothers me. I explain why

I had a BLINK moment that she wouldn’t make it to 40

She died 4 years later

That’s enough for now, asking to hear from other deafies who have lost …. Blah blah blah

Very moving to see you sign your story. Thank you for the script. I think this is a wonderful idea for finding other bereaved parents.

I also think it is a good way to reach out for support. You KNOW you are not the only one.

You are so much cleverer than me. I am unable to post to youtube.
And without doubt you are not the only one to be struggling with grief in the way you are.
Sending best wishes your way. I really hope you find someone soon in the deaf community.

I hope you find a few other deafies who have lost a loved one and who need to "talk" about it. You did good for your YouTube debut!

What I got from it was "Hi, I'm Sherry and I lost my daughter Nicole, blah blah blah... if you want to talk about losing someone, blah blah blah... damn, now what else was I going to say...wait for it... Oh yes, blah blah blah, and tissues come in handy..."

Then I skipped to the bottom.

I really do like the blonde on you. Looks good.

I am going to follow and watch your video... and it may be the start of something... but whatever comes of it, I hope you find the most in your video blogs...

Thanks!

Psst, Webster. I'm actually going gray. I had the red stripped out. When it's straight and the light is "just right" you can see I'm really more gray than blonde. But I'm slowly cutting it all off...and soon it will all be gray! Woohooooooo!

And no, I didn't say the tissues would come in handy... I said have you noticed that when you're crying people shove kleenex at you, interrupting your train of thought - I see the box of kleenex, it's right there, are they asking me to clean my face, okay let me clean my face (lol) and wait...now that we've cleaned my face where was I? You've interrupted my train of thought with the box of kleenex. So now the thoughts are gone but the emotions are still there.

Harrumph. You guys don't know sign.

What's the matter with ya'll???

LOL.

i love this! i am a DOJ ADA instructor who doesn't know sign (shame on me) but i have been looking for a class... i know that the language is so iconic that i should be able to pick up bits and pieces of conversation.. and generally i can... between the iconic language, the lip movements, and the facial expressions i do okay... but not good enough!

i love sign... love it! went to a concert a few months ago and didn't even watch the musicians! i was too busy watching the signers..they were graceful, eloquent, and so rhythmic... amazing

Thanks Sherri! =) Youtube is a good place to learn - just make sure you learn from native signers or CODAs. (children of deaf adults) You can tell, really... their videos are not as natural.

I have to sign slow because I have a slow internet connection. The faster I go the more I blur... (kind of like MS, heh)

I like your job title. You go!
